Rabbit holes are strange things.
You go in looking for answers. You start with one question. Then that question opens three more. Then those three open fifteen. Then suddenly it is 1:37 in the morning, your coffee is cold, your eyes feel like sandpaper, and you are reading about something you did not even know existed four hours ago.
And the weird part is, you still do not feel settled.
You know more. You have more information. You have names, dates, symbols, connections, theories, documents, videos, screenshots, and that one guy in the comments who somehow has a 72-part thread about it.
But do you have peace?
That is the question.
Because rabbit holes can make us feel like we are getting closer to truth while our hearts are drifting farther from the Truth.
Jesus said in John 14:6, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” That matters. Truth is not just a pile of facts. Truth is a Person. Truth has a name. Truth has a voice. Truth has scars in His hands and victory over the grave.
So yes, research can be good. Asking questions can be good. Testing things can be good. 1 Thessalonians 5:21 says to “test all things; hold fast what is good.” God does not ask us to be gullible. He does not tell us to shut our brains off and pretend evil does not exist.
But there is a difference between testing things and being consumed by things.
There is a difference between being awake and being angry at everyone you think is asleep.
That is where a lot of us get caught.
We start researching corruption, deception, spiritual darkness, lies in the world, lies in the media, lies in history, lies in institutions, lies in entertainment, lies in everything. And some of it is real. Some of it is darker than we wanted to know. Some of it makes you sit back and say, “Lord, what is wrong with this world?”
But then something happens inside us.
We start looking at people differently.
We hear someone talk about normal life and we think, “They have no idea.”
We see someone enjoy something simple and we think, “They are asleep.”
We start feeling contempt.
That word matters. Contempt is not discernment, wisdom. or the Holy Spirit giving you special vision. Contempt looks at people made in the image of God and quietly places them beneath you.
And that is dangerous.
Proverbs 16:18 says pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall. That verse is not only for the rich, famous, and powerful. It is for the researcher too. It is for the person who knows a little too much and starts thinking knowledge makes them higher than their neighbor.
I have been there. Maybe you have too.
You learn something wild, and suddenly everyone else feels foolish. You want to shake people awake. You want to send them links. You want them to see what you see.
But sometimes what we call “waking people up” is really just throwing darkness in their face without giving them the Light.
And that is not the mission.
The word knowledge is interesting. You can break it down like “knowing the ledge.” Now, I am not saying that is the actual etymology. I am saying it works as a picture. Because that is what a lot of rabbit hole knowledge feels like. You know the ledge. You know where the drop is. You know how deep the hole goes. You can point to the cliff and say, “Look how far down that darkness goes.”
But if all you do is know the ledge, you are still staring down.
You are still looking into the pit.
You are still measuring darkness.
And the longer you stare into darkness, the more distracted you become from the eternal Light.
John 8:12 says Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”
That is not poetry for a coffee mug. That is spiritual survival.
Jesus did not say, “He who studies darkness will have life.”
He did not say, “He who connects every dot will have peace.”
He did not say, “He who knows every hidden thing will be free.”
He said in John 8:31-32, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”
Abide in His Word.
That is where freedom comes from.
A lot of rabbit holes offer knowledge, but they do not give freedom. They give suspicion. They give anxiety. They give obsession. They give a strange kind of pride that feels like wisdom but produces no fruit of the Spirit.
Galatians 5:22-23 says the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
So here is a hard question: Is your research producing that?
Is it making you more loving?
More joyful?
More peaceful?
More patient with people?
More kind?
More faithful?
More gentle?
More self-controlled?
Or is it making you bitter, jumpy, distracted, arrogant, and unable to enjoy the good gifts God put right in front of you?
Because God did not create us to live hunched over a glowing screen, feeding our minds darkness until we cannot see our own family, our own Bible, our own prayer life, or our own calling.
He made us to walk with Him.
Micah 6:8 says the Lord requires us to do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with our God.
That is simple, but it is not shallow.
Do justice. Love mercy. Walk humbly.
A rabbit hole can show you evil exists. Scripture already told us that. Ephesians 6:12 says we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, powers, rulers of darkness, and spiritual hosts of wickedness in heavenly places.
So yes, darkness is real.
Corruption is real.
Deception is real.
Spiritual warfare is real.
But Jesus is more real.
Colossians 1:16-17 says all things were created through Him and for Him, and in Him all things consist. Colossians 2:15 says He disarmed principalities and powers and made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them.
That means we do not research from fear. We research from victory.
We do not look into darkness because darkness is our teacher. We look carefully, test what is true, then lift our eyes back to Christ.
That is the balance.
Research, but do not worship research.
Ask questions, but do not let questions become your master.
Expose darkness, but do not live in it.
Learn what is happening, but do not forget who is reigning.
Hebrews 12:2 says to look unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith. That is the direction. Eyes up. Heart steady. Mind renewed.
Silly rabbit, the truth is Jesus.
The hole does not save you.
The thread does not save you.
The secret knowledge does not save you.
Jesus saves.
So go ahead and research when needed. Be sober. Be watchful. Test the spirit. Pay attention. But do not lose sight of Christ in the middle of it.
The darkness wants your attention.
Jesus wants your heart.
Look up.
